Rev. Dr. Wardell Henderson started his ministry 58 years ago in the Western North Carolina Conference at Bethel and Middle Street AMEZ Churches. In 1971 Dr. Henderson was appointed to Weeping Willow AME Zion Church, where he pastored for 43 years!! Dr. Henderson considers one of his major ministry achievements, during his tenure as pastor of Weeping Willow AME Zion Church, was relocating the congregation in 1990 from 306 Billingsley Road to a site at 2220 Milton Road in the University area. A new 500 seat edifice was built with an Education Wing at a cost of 1.2 million dollars. They burned the Mortgage in 2000.
Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit the congregation grew from 80 members to over 900 members. He completed his vision for Weeping Willow AME Zion Church in 2005 with the building of a MINISTRY CENTER in 2009 that is inclusive of a full-size Gymnasium, Class/Meeting Rooms, Conference Room, Commercial Kitchen and two Offices. The Center serves as a venue for community and civic meetings and events, as well as an outreach to the youth of the community.
In 2011, he celebrated being pastor at this charge for 40 years and in ministry for 50 years. In 2014, after 43 years of pastoring Weeping Willow, Dr. Henderson was elevated to the role of Presiding Elder and appointed to the Concord District in the West Central Carolina Conference, where he humbly and excitingly served “The Mighty Concord District.” In 2017, he was appointed to the North Charlotte District where he serves with the same enthusiasm and excellence. Ask Pastor Henderson what he has to say about this and his reply “May the works that I’ve done speak for me ‘TO GOD BE THE GLORY’”

Dr. Henderson is extremely honored to receive this Gospel Image Award and thanks all those involved in the process.
Dr. Henderson feels that his utmost goal is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified, to the end that men might be saved. If the church can ‘equip’ men for discipleship, then we will become a viable and active community of faith, nurtured into holistic Christians serving one another.
